As a part of the EU funded project with ALARM called “FLEGT in Myanmar- laying foundations and mobilizing civil society”, ALARM conducted a detailed field study in 2015 on the current status of the timber traded and forest change. That study focused on the issues of forest management for timber, and the timber industry. The method involved interviews with a wide range of stakeholders’ nationality and regionally, field study of forests at timber extraction sites in three state/regions, visits to log depots and processing factories in Kachin, Tanitharyi, Sagaing, Mandalay and Yangon, analysis of previously unreleased Ministry of Environmental conservation & Forestry (MOECAF) data.
The approach for four different collection methods were interviews with key informants at national, region/state, field levels and workshops, field observations in a range of timber extraction sites; also, at timber transit locations; assessment of official data provided by MOECAF and review of secondary literature.
