Municipal waste has become a serious issue in urban environmental management in mega cities like Yangon and Mandalay. It can be even worse because of improper waste management practices. Therefore, ALARM recruited an international expert to do waste audit in Mandalay, to give a quantitative analysis of the municipal waste in terms of volume, weight and composition. The main objective of the study was to determine possible utilizations of the waste at the dumpsite to reduce waste amount and methane production. The waste audit was done for 6 days (3 days in the North and 3 days in the South) between the 4th and 10th Dec. 2017. It followed the suggestions of the ISWM report by the ADB and was the first of its kind. The audit was undertaken at the entrance of the two dumping sites, before being searched by scavengers. At the entrance of the site every truck was stopped, a sample of 50 liter was taken and the filling percentage of waste was estimated. The overall weight (888t/d) show a decrease compared to the audit made by MCDC in July, which can be linked to the rainy season where more water enters the waste. A comparison of the current assessment and past audits suggest as well that the waste density is different on the two dump sites. While the north has a higher density with 224kg/m^3, the south has a density of 192kg/m^3. The waste composition analysis shows also a good overlap with past results. The difference only appears when comparing the two dump sites. The north dump receives far more organic material (around 70%), while at the south the organic ratio is only around 60%.
