1 Strengthening forest governance through civil society monitoring and tracking illicit timber flows Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA) Oct-2015 – Sept-2018 Tanintharyi This project contributes to FGMC outputs one, two and three supporting the engagement of civil society within relevant VPA’s and exposing the lack of enforcement of illicit timber from both producer and consuming countries. By supporting local capacity of civil society independent monitoring this project will contribute to securing forest governance reform. Evidence based information obtained through field investigations will contribute to understanding illicit timber flows, methods used and actors behind the illegal trade. This information will also assist in increasing knowledge and facilitating change through international conventions such as the Convention on International Trade and Endangered Species (CITES), UN Convention Against Transnational Organized Crime (UNTOC) and the UN Convention against Corruption (UNCAC). This project intends to continue building on EIA’s current work of investigations, policy reform and capacity building within the East Asia region by monitoring the illicit trade in timber and wood products from East Asia via major processing countries such as Vietnam, to consuming countries EU, US and China.
2 Advocacy , Engagement and Public Dialogue in Forest Governance Family Health International (FHi360) Jul-2017 – Jul-2018 Shan, Magway, Mandalay ,Kayah The objective of this project is to help forest dwellers get access to information, to support and strengthen civil society networks, build civil society leaders, establish common positions on resource governance reform issues and advocate for these positions with a range of existing government bodies.
3 People Led Resource Governance TROCAIRE Nov-2014 – Oct-2017 Myeik, Tanintharyi Bokpyin This project will assure that vulnerable communities have increased legitimate access to land, forests and other natural resources through land and community forest titling. It will also support civil society and communities to independently monitor resource rights crimes, including land confiscations, the illegal timber and wildlife trade and illegal land concessions, through user groups. Finally, it will support vulnerable communities to establish legitimate avenues to engage with decision makers and influence policy.
4 Laying Foundations & Mobilising Civil Society The European Union Jan-2014 – Dec-2016 Kachin State, Sagaing State, and Tanintharyi Region. The project was implemented in Myanmar at 3 levels; nationally – where the capacities of stakeholders were developed, networks and advocacy platforms facilitated; regionally – in Kachin State, Sagaing State, and Tanintharyi Division (all illegal logging hotspots) and at local level in 9 townships of Kachin, Sagaing and Tanintharyi. The aim of the project was to lay the foundation for civil society to fully and proactively participate in forest governance deliberations as a FLEGT process emerges in Myanmar through raising awareness and mobilizing, capacitating and engaging with civil society and other stakeholdes for inclusive FLEGT-related deliberations and negotiations; through initiating transparent and credible FLEGT-related information systems and through conducting pilot demonstration in implementation of FLEGT related activities in illegal logging in environmental sensitive areas of Myanmar.
5 Upbringing Resource Governance and Empowerment for Sustainable Livelihood (URGEs) Pyoe Pin, Oxfam, Danish Church Aid, Norwegian Peoples’ Aid Jul-2012 – Dec-2015 Myanmar This program is a three-year long term program and implemented from 2012 to 2015 with the funding supports from Pyoe Pin, DCA, Oxfam-Novib, NPA and KAS. EcoDev had launched this program with a view of increasing the momentum of change by continuing this program intervention in intensifying activities related to Civic education and capacity building on securing resource right of the grassroots, organizational development and networking of key stakeholders, intellectual support for public consultation in legislative process, encouraging community initiatives in environmental conservation, organizing public campaign for exercising democratic right and responsibility and promoting community development-cum- business investment for climate resilient rural enterprise development. As the result of the achievement of this program, EcoDev can conduct evidence based research like the country energy assessment and Market-led Community Forestry Research etc. In addition, Public Opinion Surveys for Public Policy Reform had been successfully finished and can be designed as a bridge to disseminate the findings to the general public and some legislators. Moreover, EcoDev deliberately organized the several workshops, seminars, meetings for the sake of sustainable development and Sustainable Environmental Governance in Myanmar. The beneficiaries of the program covered a wide range of beneficiary types covering the individuals, the NGOs, the private companies, the government departments and the parliamentary members. In terms of geographical coverage, all States and Regions of Myanmar are indirectly benefiting from the program whereas three states (Kachin, Rakhine& Shan) and five regions (Yangon, Magway, Sagaing, Ayarwaddy & Tanitharyi) are directly benefitting from the program. By implementing this program, EcoDev could fill up the gaps of the country which are necessary for the sake of sustainable natural resources management and poverty reduction movements in Myanmar.
6 Empowering the Local CBOs Network for Ensuring Resources Governance in Kachin State (ENERGi) Oxfam GB Jun 2014 – Jul 2015 Kachin The overall objective of this project is to contribute to levering up the environmental governance in Kachin State, through fostering communities’ initiatives for resource governance to secure resource rights and sustainable livelihoods of local communities. Two major outcomes expected from the intervention of this project are 1) Stakeholders’ Capacity is raised for sustainable resources management and pro poor livelihood development in Kachin State and 2) the continuation of environmental conservation activities initiated by KCWG is nurtured for sustainable environmental movements in Kachin State.
7 Setting up REDD+ readiness mechanism and enhancing awareness on REDD+ right based approach United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) May 2014 – Mar 2015 Layshi , Lahe , Khanhti The project is to enhance community awareness about REDD+ in 3 townships of Naga areas within Sagaing Region and to identify the ways how REDD+ should be implemented in ethnic regions.
8 Environmental Watch for Environmental Governance in Myanmar (EWEG) French Embassy Jan 2015 – Dec 2017 Myanmar The objective of this project is to improve environmental democracy and governance through participatory mechanism of environmental report card system and environmental hotline and the targeted groups are the grassroots and most disadvantaged communities across the nation, through improving legislative and law enforcement process. At least 10 million people (one fifth of entire population) were benefited as the project intends and increased level of awareness and knowledge on environmental damage and legal rights concerning access to forest, land, water and fishery. Also the capacity of local communities increased to exercise environmental democracy in terms of articulating their needs, lobbying for the socio-environmental issues and making decision collectively for required. Environmental conditions have been improved due to the accumulated effects of the project intervention in such a way of (1) assuring more commitments by government to respond to environmental issues (2) protection of negative environmental impact due to commercial investment projects, and (3) enhancing people participation in environmental management at local level. Environmental laboratory has also been set up and well-functioned.
9 Strengthening Mangrove Friendly Aquaculture Development Project (SMFAD) Oxfam (Novib), LIFT Jan -2013 – Dec-2014 Labutta The project was the post-Nargis rehabilitation project funded by LIFT in 2010. Part of the rehabilitation project, major responsibility of ECODEV is to restore ecological productivity and environmental protection of mangrove ecosystem in Laputta township, Ayeyarwaddy Delta. While cash for work program is created through reforestation of mangrove area for seasonal employment, ECODEV innovatively introduce the model of Mangrove-friendly-aquaculture system. Success of this system demonstrated the co-existence of people and forest in order to resolve the growing issue of social instability and land tenure insecurity under the circumstances of rural people heavy encroachment in mangrove reserve forests where Forest Department was juristically managed.
10 Building Dynamic And Self Reliant Rual – Project/ Facilitating Evergreen Village Development Fund Department of Rural Development, Oxfam Jan 2015 – Dec 2015 Ayeyarwaddy The project aims to help the DRD in implementing Evergreen Village Development Fund through building the capacity of the DRD staff to be able to effectively monitor the progress of the livelihood activities being implemented at the villages using the funds from the DRD; through setting up the baseline socioeconomic status in the project townships
11 Coastal Livelihood And Environmental Assets Rehabilitation (CLEARR) Mangrove Environment and Rehabilitation Network (MERN), LIFT July 2011 – May 2014 Gwa, Kyeintali, Rakhine State The project was implemented in Kyein-ta-li sub-township and Gwa Township in Rakhine State of Myanmar targeted altogether, 62 villages of 24 village tracts, with 36 villages in the core area intensively. The 36 core area villages are very close to the mangrove area, and activities focus included livelihood development, mangrove restoration, community forestry and joint forest management activities. It is anticipated that all 62 villages have experienced benefits to livelihoods of increased ecological services of restored mangroves, including disaster risk reduction. The overarching goal of the project is to ensure food security and livelihood development of local community through inputting start-up assistances, generating income and diversifying job opportunities as well as environmental sustainability and enriched biodiversity by active participation of informed local community in governing mangrove ecosystem with greater sense of ownership and shared responsibility for livelihood protection and socio-economic well-being. After the implementation of the project, livelihood productivity increased through development of diverse and locally- appropriate agriculture, forestry, fisheries or other economic activities, Mangrove ecosystems have been rehabilitated, with increased potential to support sustainable livelihoods, through cooperation within and between communities and other key stakeholders, vulnerable households have increased food security and access to social protection while contributing to ecosystem restoration and Capacity built at all levels (local and NGO/IP) for participative and reflective planning and implementation of livelihood and resource management interventions, and engagement of key stakeholders.

14 Scaling Up Rural Enterprises Project (SURE) Livelihood and Food Security trust Fund (LIFT) Mar-2011 – Apr-2014 Magway This project focuses on scaling up the rural food processing income generation activity into commercially viable cottage industry. This is also demonstration project on how value chain development of rural product could be pursued for rural economy, particularly with the effect on improving farmer income. This project is a continuation effort of women income generation activity that has been successfully initiated by ECODEV in Magwe township of Dry zone since year 2000. At present, this project is to cover 8 villages in Magwe and two villages from Minbu and Kyaukpadaung townships. The funding agency of this project is LIFT, multi-donor development trust fund for sustainable livelihood and civil society development in Myanmar, for implementing the project activity starting from 2011.
15 Mangrove Empowerment And Livelihood Security (MEALs) Oxfam Jan 2011 – April 2014 Ayarwaddy MEALs project was implemented to conserve the Meinmahala Forest Reserve and to assist the livelihood and capacity development of the surrounding local community funded by Oxfam Novib and Pyoe Pin Program (funded by DFID & SIDA). The overarching goal of the project is to ensure environmental sustainability and to enrich biodiversity through the active participation of informed local community in governing mangrove ecosystem with greater sense of ownership and shared responsibility for livelihood protection and socio-economic well-being. Paving the way forward to stated goals, two specific purposes are to rehabilitate mangrove ecosystem for improving community resilience and food Security and to build the foundation for mangrove governance. As part of the project, Standard Operational Procedure (SOP) for resource conservation could be developed in which guidelines and procedures for resource conservation, patrolling, performance evaluation, participatory monitoring and evaluation financial management, are clearly outlined.
16 Improving resource governance to rehabilitate degraded environment in the Inle Lake United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) July 2012 – Dec 2013 Kalaw , Shan State With the funding support from Norwegian Government, Ministry of Environmental Conservation and Forestry of Myanmar and UNDP, ECODEV conducted participatory assessment to analyze biophysical and socioeconomic situation by utilizing participatory tools and remote sensing/geographical information system in order to provide recommend domain for implementing project activities of natural resource management and livelihood development in Inle watershed area.

18 Climate Adaptive Capacity Initiative and Poverty Alleviation Network Activities Group (NAG) Feb-2012 – Jan-2013 Bogalay Climate Change is a serious risk to poverty reduction and although it is global, its negative impacts are more severely felt by poor people. Facing with the climate change in Myanmar, urgent actions are needed to strengthen climate adaptive capacity and this project was implemented in the Ayeyawady Region, the Cyclone Nargis-hit area. The project aims to promote the public awareness on climate change, stimulate and strengthen the process of local initiative in addressing climate change issue and establish the early warning system (dissemination of weather forecast) in the project villages.
19 Natural Resource Management, Democracy, Human Rights: Building Capacity for Community-Based Resource Management, Enhancing Resource Rights and Strengthening Civil Society Organizations in Kachin State. East West Centre (EWC) Sep-2010 – Jun-2012 Kachin This project is to build the capacity of local communities in Kachin State to implement community-based resource management activities and will assist individuals and communities to acquire legal recognition of their agricultural and forest lands. By building the capacity of communities to manage their resources and claim their land rights , and by strengthening civil society through a mobilized network of social actors , this project will enhance democracy and human rights in Kachin State and more broadly throughout Burma.
20 Integrated livelihood development in Dry Zone European Commission. (EU) Jun-2009 – Dec-2011 Pakkoku, Pwint Phyu, Minbu and Mawe ECODEV collaborate with Save the Children Fund (SCF) for implementing integrated livelihood activities in order to improve the livelihood of poor living in 300 villages of Pakkoku, Pwint Phyu, Minbu and Mawe Townships in Dry Zone of Myanmar. While SCF is implementing activities related to improvement of maternal and children health and nutrition, ECODEV is responsible for implementing community forestry, agroforestry, energy saving of toddy farmer, soil and water conservation and livestock husbandry to increase household income of the poor.
21 Energy Efficient Cooking Stove for Empowering Women for Environmental Conservation Danish Church Aid (DCA) Jul-2010 – Dec-2011 Thayet, Aung Lan and Sin Paung We The objective of the project is to save dry zone forest from deforestation and degradation by means of social marketing of energy efficient cooking stove which can save 1 metric ton of wood per year. Women groups are formed to mobilize local community awareness on environmental conservation and deforestation and to promote selling efficient stove at affordable price to village households. In addition, they are trained for establishment of multipurpose nursery with the fund raised through selling stove to household users. Seedlings from nursery are also going to sell again to their customer within their social networking villages. In this way, the project expects to increase the role of women in community development and environmental conservation.
22 Strengthening Politically Interactive Communication for Empowering Society (SPICES) Norwaygien People Aid (NPA) Oct-2010 – Sep-2011 Myanamr The major purpose of the development of public opinion poll center in Myanmar is to catalyze the interactive political process as well as to harness the political will of the public for participatory democracy. Part and partial of its purpose: to enhance political awareness, interest and communication among the public and political actors for cultivating the informed decision making and democratic changes in Myanmar and to build the capacity for institutionalizing independent public opinion poll in the long run.
23 Preparation of National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP) Global Environmental Facility (GEF) Jan-2010 – Jun-2010 Myanamr As a member country of United Nations Convention on Biodiversity (UNCBD), Myanmar is obliged to develop national strategy and action plan for effective and efficient biodiversity conservation. Forest Department of Myanmar has been a focal point among government agencies for preparing NBSAP and ECODEV has provided technical expertise for facilitating the process since 2010
24 Education, training and public awareness on climate change Global Environmental Facility (GEF) , United Nations Aug-2008 – Nov-2009 Myanamr Myanmar is signatory to United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and has an obligation to report to the Convention on regular basic about the status of Climate Change in the country. Global Environmental Facility (GEF) and United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) has funded Myanmar to enable in preparing national communication report under UNFCCC. Part of this process, National Commission on Environmental Affairs (NCEA) of Myanmar has been taking a lead in implementing the project in 2008 for preparing national communication report in which ECODEV has been appointed as team leader for implementing “Education, Training and Public Awareness on Climate Change in accordance with Article 6 of the Convention. ECODEV has developed training program for government officials, development partitions from civil society organization and journalist from public media in order them to understand the climate change in Myanmar. ECODEV has also conducted nationwide survey of citizen’s awareness on climate change and carried out public awareness campaign throughout the country.
